While one goes about motivating an employee, they are simply playing a psychological game. There are two types of conditioning that impact the game. They are, operate conditioning, and social cognitive learning. Both of which affect people's motivation and willingness to perform assigned task by altering their behavior.

Generally, operant conditioning works with punishments and rewards. These punishments and rewards are used to convince people to do what one wishes them to do. By rewarding people when they do what is asked of them they learn to like doing the task and their motivation is raised. By punishing people when they do not do what is asked of them, they will learn not to do it anymore and refocus their motivation towards achieving the rewards.

Moreover, the schedule which these rewards and punishments are dealt out according to can be done in one of two ways. Either continuously, where the employee receives an award each time they achieve the task. Alternatively, intermittently where the employee gets a taste of the reward and continues to work for the reward . Hoping that one day, they will achieve it again. Rookies tend to work for continuous rewards, whereas veterans thrive on seeing those intermittent awards once again.

Social cognitive learning on the other hand, is based off the social cognitive theory, which states that most behaviors are learned by interacting with other people. This is done mainly through observational learning where one simply watches another's actions and observes what they are rewarded for. Then the observer's motivation is raised with the focus of performing the task that the "being observed" individual has done in order to receive the reward. Another method by which social cognitive learning is undergone is tutelage. Tutelage is traditional teaching such as the type done in a classroom or by a parent. Through Tutelage, one is taught how to do things and what things will benefit them the most in the workplace.

Then the employee attempts to achieve those things by motivating himself or herself up the corporate later to their target level.
Along with the manager, many other employees in the workplace influence an employee's behavior and motivation. These are known as social influences. Social influences are people influencing other people's behaviors. This happens because it is human nature to want to conform to the norm or be obedient to the higher authority. The average person does not want to stand out from the norm.

As a result, they will focus their motivation towards becoming part of the norm. Therefore, it is the manager's responsibility to motivate the norm to be productive and cooperative employees that way the majority of people will aspire towards becoming productive and cooperative employees.
