These examples begin to reveal a complex and volatile interdependence that would have been unthinkable 15 or 20 years ago. Joe lost his job because of the competition from poor Mexicans like Maria, and now her wage is held down by cheaper exports from China. But Joe now has a better job, and the American economy has gained from expanding exports to Mexico. Maria's standard of living has improved and her son can hope for a better future. Joe's pension fund is earning higher returns through investments in growing enterprises around the world; and Xiao Zhi is looking forward to higher wages and the change to buy consumer goods.

Although this is an example of how interrelated individual lives can be in the globalization context, it gives valuable insights on the way states are linked together and the international relations are developing now. 1. Defining Globalization
Globalization is conceptualized as a process of linkage and interdependence between territories. A common threat running through most of the views on globalization is the recognition of the significance of the dramatic reduction in the tyranny of distance, a world in which time-space has shrunk dramatically as a result of technological innovations in transport and communications, especially information technologies.

Thus shrinking of the world stems from the increase in range, speed and intensity of social interaction and communication.
Globalization is a hotly contested notion, often reflecting the different disciplinary or cultural perspectives of the proponents of the concept. This is particularly reflected in terms of perspectives on the relationship between the local, the national and the global and the degree to which national states are seen as having been hollowed out.
There are many possible definitions of globalization.

One is that saying that globalization is a process by which places and institutions become integrated into a system that has global dimensions and from a geographical perspective two fundamental aspects of the process are scale enlargement in the spatial basis of organizations and institutions and increasing levels and intensity of interconnection across international boundaries. Globalization is a process which refers both to the compression of the world and the intensification of consciousness of the world as a whole. Globalization is perceived as an imprecise and developing process, an ideology and program which challenge the current order.
