Gateway sells desktops, laptops, workstations and servers via the Internet and telephone. Gateway has introduced their "country stores" offering consumers 'a first hand look' of their products. Gateway is #2 in the direct sales computer market. Gateway's chairman and founder, Ted Waitt owns 44% of the company and his brother, Norm owns 8% of Gateway.

Currently, Compaq is the #1 PC maker in the world with about 12% of the market and is the third largest computer firm in the world. Compaq offers a similar product line to Dell with one difference, Compaq is available in department /computer stores such as Best Buy. Compaq also offers their customers the option to configure/purchase computers via the Internet. Compaq has joined forces with Digital and Tandem to offer customers additional support and services. The Compaq and Digital team promises the whole enchilada, a complete range product and services for consumers and in addition turning up the heat in the computer market.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) the world's second largest computer company behind IBM that offers a wider range of products and services such as printers, digital image lines and thin client machines. HP is teaming with Microsoft and Intel in producing new products for example; HP and Intel are working on a next generation chip to run other operating systems besides MS Windows. HP offers their computers via the Internet allowing for custom configuration but not to the same level of detail or options as Dell or Gateway.

IBM, like Hewlett-Packard, offers a wider range of products and services compared to Dell or Gateway and is the #1 hardware company in the world. IBM is the #2 software company (Microsoft is #1). IBM offers computers via the Internet but their selection and upgrades are limited. IBM owns Lotus Notes and offers a vast array of other products and services.

Bargaining power of suppliers: Dell uses Intel chips in their computer products, giving Intel some bargaining power over Dell. Microsoft's operating system is the standard however; Dell offers a variety of software packages, several NOS such as Novell Netware 5 and other tested OS such as Sunspot Solaris 2.5.1. Dell does not seem to favor one supplier over another; they offer several vendors' products. Dell has several well-established supplier/vendor relationships and intends to capitalize on these relationships through innovative uses of the Internet. Analysis: low/medium
