The most important aspects of this document are the circumstances and influences surrounding its origin and those individuals that are responsible for its completion. The first step to understanding how and why the colonists would consider requesting independence from England, we must understand the situation in England not only at that time but, also much earlier than 1776. Prior to the colonies writing the Declaration of Independence England experienced much turmoil from how their subjects were to be treated by the government in England. The average citizen in England would obtain certain rights that previously did not exist.
Hence, the period of over 100 years before the colonies declared independence saw England struggling internally to maintain control of the people as they became enlightened with education and science such as authors, writers, and, scientists. The majority of those that were educated prior to the 17th and 18th centuries belonged to the church. Of those individuals wishing to receive an education the majority came from the upper class or the aristocracy, and the education they received for the most part came from the church.
As more people became educated they began to question the teachings of the church. The Kings right to rule was believed to have come directly from god and passed through the Pope; however, as men became enlightened this view no longer remained unchallenged. The people sought to limit the powers of the King and the church over their lives. Englishmen, such as Burke, Locke, and, Smith wrote books in reference to God, government, and, science. « mai multe referate din Istorie
