First off Bulldogs and Pugs have many small differences in body structure. Even though they both are small in stature, very compact and sport "Rose shaped" ears, the similarities in body structure end there. Bulldogs have a very wide body shape, with a thick massive head. The head should be broad (the broader the more prized) with cheeks that extend to the sides of the eyes. The skin on the skull and forehead should fall in dense folds.

A Bulldog muzzle is short and pug-like, and its nose should be broad and black with large nostrils. Its upper lip is droopy and its lower jaw should be very undershot (looking like it has a serious under bite.) Their eyes are very round, far apart and very dark. The Bulldog's tail is short and carries low. The coat comes in red, fawn, brindle, pale yellow, washed-out red, or white, and can be a combination of any of these colors. The muzzle sometimes is dark in color. With its stocky legs set squarely at each corner of its compact, muscular body, the Bulldog's deliberate gain has become a waddle.

Pugs have a number of physical characteristics that differ from those of a Bulldog. Even though Pugs have a square, thickset, stocky compact, body that compares to that of a Bulldog, their coat is soft and sleek, and comes in apricot, fawn, black and silver colors. All Pugs have a short, flat, black muzzle and velvety ears. Moles on the cheeks are considered beauty spots.

A Pug's eyes are prominent, expressive, dark and lustrous. Their teeth should meet in a slightly undershot bite. The back of a Pug is short, with a level topline and their tail lies in a tight curl. In the best specimens of Pug, the tail lays in a double curl on the back. Their limbs are straight and strong which gives them a jaunty, rolling gait that is quite distinctive.

Secondly Bulldogs and Pugs have many differences in their temperament. Both dogs are described as affectionate, willing to do anything to please their owners and frequently snore while awake and asleep, but that is where the similarities end. Although the Bulldogs' appearance can be somewhat intimidating, it is among the gentlest of dogs. Just the same it will see off any intruder, and few would risk a close encounter with a dog brave enough to bait a bull.
