The concept that discrimination can be based on "race" assumes the existence of "race" itself. The US Government's Human Genome Program has announced that "the most complete mapping of human DNA to date indicates that there is no distinct genetic basis to racial types." Therefore, "racial characteristics" logically cannot and do not exist either.
According to the Human Genome Project, "skin color does exist as a matter of science."So that which is commonly referred to as "racism" could be more scientifically referred to as "skin color-aroused discrimination". The term "skin color aroused discrimination" has the benefit that it is based on verifiable science, is not based on disproved notions of science, and does not perpetuate a false belief in the disproved concept of biological "race".
Among the years people developed a high sense of discrimination based on skin color, and very often they attributed certain behaviors and attitudes to certain races. In a society desperately trying to extinguish the notion of racism, some races can take advantage of that and others could start feeling marginalized. In countries where there predominates only one race, the notions of racism and skin color-aroused discrimination are barely met.
Instead other problems are raise like social class discrimination, religious beliefs intolerance, sexual orientation discrimination and political views discrimination. It seems that people tend to find as many differences as they can between them so they can rank themselves. Most of the time the criteria people use to establish those differences are superficial and do not express the reality. Skin color cannot say if a person is able or not to complete a certain task and social status cannot make someone eligible for a job.
The notion of racism in the way most people understand it can never vanish. People that consider their race lower than other's are by the definition given racists. Usually these people feel like they don't fit into groups where another race is predominant and they try blaming the majority as being racist when actually they are the ones that are categorizing themselves at a lower level.
The predominant difference these people mostly look at is the skin color. Usually these people will tend to be surrounded only by people of the same race, while people that consider themselves being part of a superior race have no problem being surrounded with people belonging to different races. Therefore people that are most blamed for being racists are desperately trying to prove they are not.
This is why school and universities are more likely to accept students from different ethnic backgrounds, even though they are not academically the brightest, to prove they are not discriminating. Even in the work place racial diversity is encouraged. Someone that is less qualified for a specific position in a company will obtain the job only so the people in charge don't seem in the slightest bit racist. Unknowingly this encourages racism for the more qualified person that could have had brought more revenue for the company.
