Approach: I would design a more adaptive structure for Widget, using variations on division of labor, coordinating mechanisms, and recognize and delineate the informal structure from Widget. I would suggest working towards decentralization by extending the responsibility for decision making to employees at all level, at the same time making sure that there is no failure to coordinate various activities and avoid sending any conflicting messages across the company.

In this given situation, I feel Job enrichment strategy might work well for Widget and Mary Gofast. Job enrichment increases the scope of a job through job extension or job rotation. This strategy changes a job horizontally by adding tasks and vertically by adding responsibility.
Approach: I would study the current job design at Widget in depth and analyze as to what extent jobs are simplified or enriched, where the focus of the work has been for so many years, to what extent employees are satisfied with their current jobs and responsibilities, and has there been any kind of autonomy in performing job. These factors are very critical for redesigning a job. I would suggest the new management for the job characteristics model of enrichment, which offers a more complete way of evaluating and enriching a job.
